Business Analyst.
Hello all,
I'm working on changing careers out of direct patient care into a more business focused job with more career advancement opportunities. I recently earned by Bachelor's degree in business and have worked in healthcare for 5 years.
I have an interview this week for a Business Analyst position with the state I live in for the Medicaid division and I'm nervous but excited. Could any with experience in this field charge what I could expect if I entered into it? I'm unsure how the interview will go but I know my career change won't be an easy transition and getting my foot in the door for an interview is exciting.
I would appreciate any resources or experiences anyone can share.
Thank you.
OP here:
I didn't end up getting the job but I think the interview went well overall. I did write back to them thanking them for their time and asking for feedback if they were open to it.
I appreciate all the advice that was given here. Changing careers out of a clinician role is hard and I know it will take time to find the right fit. I have more interviews scheduled for other roles, so I'm not disheartened at all.
Thank you again for all the advice!
Also consider research administration at a local hospital or academic medical school. Our research support offices are always looking for people with healthcare background. Job titles are all over the place (grants administrators, research coordinators, analysts of various types), so there's no single term to help you narrow them down besides research administration, but comb through the job descriptions because it's often not as complicated as you'd assume.
Hi-
Good luck! Your healthcare experience is a great asset to the role as you know the ins and outs of the field that you essentially will be servicing and seeing from the ‘other’ side.
I too was in healthcare before moving into the business field (accounting). The first thing I noticed when I switched fields is how reserved and antisocial everyone was. A certain type of personality is drawn to that type of work so don’t take it personally if your coworkers are not as engaging. It’s nothing against you, just a different environment.
The pay will definitely be better so good luck on your interview again and keep us posted!
