Hi, I just joined Fairygodboss and am looking for advice re career pivots.
I've always loved numbers and Microsoft Excel is my happy place (I know that is ridiculously nerdy, but it's very true). Anyway, I started my career at an investment bank, made my way over to Laura Mercier to do corporate finance, and finally pivoted to brand marketing/strategy. While I love working for a cosmetic brand, I feel that my 5 years at Laura Mercier are coming to an end as there is no upward trajectory for me given the current environment. I would love to continue working in brand strategy; however, I feel that my somewhat scattered background is a turnoff for recruiters. I actually believe that my background shows my interdisciplinary learning and has led me to be the perfect candidate for brand strategy as I can leverage both my finance and create experience; however, I'm struggling to communicate that through my resumes, cover letters and any messages to the recruiters. Any suggestions as to how to word this so I stand out in the crowd and get noticed?
Thanks,
Amy
Your diverse experience is an absolute asset. Focus on exactly what you stated, that finance and creative gives you a well rounded perspective and experience. It allows you to speak to multiple different stakeholders. Tailor your CL to the position you’re going for and use those key words and phrases.
Hi Amy!
I'm working for a career start-up that helps with this exact thing! You can arrange a strategy call with the founder, it's 100% free and they help you to figure out which career might be your best fit and how to achieve the switch!
The call is one-on-one so you it's kinda like career therapy!
You can schedule the free call here:https://calendly.com/elissa-arcvida/career-strategy-session?month=2021-06
You are the perfect candidate , now choose your dream companies and reflect what you just write in your headline.
I use Worded, where you can paste a job you like and paste it to compare the keywords that you have or are missing in your resume. Which better scans your capabilities as the best solution for the role.
Your financial background leverages you even further.
Own it and go for what inspires you.
Interestingly, you just did.."my background shows my interdisciplinary learning and has led me to be the perfect SOLUTION for brand strategy as I can leverage both my finance and create experience."
Just like you, I have more of a career "lattice" vs linear "ladder." No shame there, as long as you best leverage your transferable skills. As a coach who's helped so many leaders like you create their dream role, you should present your business case for why you are the perfect SOLUTION to solve the potential new company's biggest pain points or maximize their opportunities with your integrated experience.
A candidate is one of many, so let's remove that from your vocabulary.
Your "blue ocean strategy". (read the book if you haven't already) should be to carve a niche for yourself where you can stand out as THE one, more of a center of excellence than a cog in someone else's wheel.
I share nuggets and advice about this all week long on Linkedin, so you 're welcomed to follow me there as well. https://www.linkedin.com/in/patroque
LMK if any questions, good luck!
What are the titles you're looking to move into? Is it brand strategy specifically or something else? Make sure you have the role you want to move into reflected on your resume (either with the same words or very similar) - recruiters are often scanning quickly for those terms so they'll catch their attention!
I would incorporate the term "Brand Strategy" into your resume wherever it is even a little bit applicable!
