I am 53 years old and have been a Hairstylist for the past 20 years. I need to change careers because of my body, but dont know what to do. As a Hairstylist, I have done a lot of upselling, computer entry, phone answering and building customer relationships.
In the past I have also done Real Estate but had to walk away when the market dropped and I went thru a divorce. Can anyone lead me in any new directions to help me?
Have you ever thought about an image consultant for executive women and men possibly? I know a CEO friend who is a great businesswoman but needs help looking great. She needs help with her makeup, her outfits, what colors to wear, how to wear her hair, etc. It would take a lot of marketing and you wouldn't probably start making money for two years, but with your background I bet you are into style? Some women just don't have it. And they're willing to pay to get it. Do some research!
Thank you, I never thought of that, so thank you for the suggestion, it gives me something to work on.
I’m thinking some sort of sales role. Could be retail at a dept store or a more corporate job. Do you have a degree? If you’re open to sales, browse job listings on the various sites and see if anything appears to be a good fit. To be totally frank with you, I worry that a more corporate environment would dismiss your application because they’ll assume you have limited computer skills, so if you are open to sales, look for opportunities with more customer interaction than sitting behind a computer (could be real estate If you’re open to a return to that). I’ve been car shopping recently so it’s top of mind, how about working at a car dealership? I wouldn’t know how stable and good the pay is, just an idea. Do you live in a major city?
Thank you for that recommendation. I have owned my own salon in the past as well as managed a salon. I enjoyed doing both. My problem I'm running into is arthritis in my knees, already had one knee replaced, plus my hands and feet. I do enjoy moving around and interacting with people and clients, but it can be painful being on my feet for hours on end.
I wish I could be more helpful but my line of work is very different. I recommend you use your network of contacts - friends, former clients, etc. Reconnect and tell them you’re looking for something new, perhaps they know of something.
