Welcome, Kristen! Sounds like an exciting shift for you! What market are you based in (so we know what city to connect you to people in)?

Nice! I used to live there and work in the PD/L&D space, and two people I used to follow were Brodie Riordan and Nick Hladek. Both of them are phenomenal at what they do, and would be worth Googling :-)

Thanks for the welcome! I'm in between gigs right now. I'm currently volunteering to redesign a non-profit organization's website, so I can get a little more direct experience in the field, while also actively looking for paid opportunities.

Got it -- nice! Something to think about is that making a geographic shift as well as an industry shift AND a skillset focus/specialization shift at once can be a little tricky, so if you need a job *fast,* you might consider looking at roles that are very similar to what you left in NY (but less fashion). I imagine if you get the Richmond piece and the non-fashion piece nailed down, you can add the UX/UI/impact pieces as the next layers down the road once you're more stable and established in the area.

That's very good advice! Perhaps it'll be easier for me to get a job as a graphic designer at a tech company to get into the field, and then move into UX work later.

Hi All! I was a graphic designer for 6 years at a fashion company in New York and recently moved back to my hometown Richmond, VA. I felt that fashion was too rigid and there was no upward mobility, so I decided to get into tech, which is all about fostering innovation and encourages creative thinking. I'm now looking for work in UX/UI Design. I'd love to get into the social impact/non-profit sector of tech, but right now I'd just like to break into the field wherever I can!

Welcome Milan! Sounds like lots of BIG transitions happening in your life right now. Have you landed a role in tech graphic design and are looking to switch into UX/UI in social impact, or are you in between gigs right now and looking to land your first Richmond thing ASAP?

Re-launching!
10/17/19 at 8:23PM UTC
Hi! I'm a stay-at-home mom (for the past 15 years...which included a few years of caring for an elderly parent). I left a 16-year career in publishing to raise my family. Now, I'd like to start working again (out of the house). But, I have really struggled with creating a path on this newest journey. Re-launching has been a challenge! I did have a part-time (10-month )consulting gig last year -- which ended in July. But, I seem to consistently put family needs in front of my own. I'd love to become part of a tribe that's motivating and helps me find my way. Nice to be here!

Welcome! Sounds like you have some great self-awareness about what you want and how you're currently prioritizing your life. Can't wait to get to know you further and support you in this exploration of family's needs vs your needs!
