Career Changers!

Hi all I’m in the process of career changing, I’ve been a Nursing assistant for many years in the hospital setting.

I’m graduating in May with a bachelors in Social work, I need a entry level job. It’s scary because most jobs require experience. I plan on continuing my education looking to become a forensic Social worker but I’m not sure which direction to move entry-level

Obviously nursing and social work are different fields but there are similarities in the care and connections you make with your patients as a nurse and your cases as a social worker. Leverage those points in your resume. That is your advantage over other first time graduates.

Are there any career advisors at your school that you could talk to or is there an alumni network you can tap into? That might help you to connect with someone currently in the field and 1) get some career advice and 2) potentially even find an open position!

Hi Latoya! Congratulations on your impending graduation! As a CNA in a hospital setting, you've got a lot of great experience. I'm assuming you're interested in a social work job (entry-level). Even as a new grad, you can and should leverage your healthcare background by focusing on things like your experience working with a variety of clients/patients in stressful situations; knowledge of healthcare systems; and coordination of care activities. It's really a matter of repackaging your valuable experience. In terms of target positions, something like an assistance specialist in a community health center, benefit counselor, or agency work for home health might be appealing choices. I suggest looking for opportunities in healthcare, insurance, and community services. Best wishes :)
