Can you help me with this? 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5?

#ASK Hi ladies! I'm working on an offering and would love a little help What is your biggest holdup from getting to work flexibly? 1,2,3,4, or 5? 1. My manager is resistant to flex practices 2. My organization is not open or does not have formalized flexible work practices 3. Not enough info or data to ask for flexible work 4. Fear that my flexible work request will be rejected 5. Worry I'll be seen as less committed at work and may even suffer retribution (i.e. less meaty work, demotion, losing job)

What was key for me was that I reserved a conference room to be able to focus and crank out the work when needed. My manager realized allowing me to isolate myself occasionally increased my productively. He was the advocate to upper management; I had little to do with it.

Did any of the above reasons worry or hold you back from asking sooner? What do you feel was key in your advocacy of your remote working arrangement?

What is your definition of "work flexibly"? Are you looking for 4-10 hour days? Are you looking to work remotely a few days a week? Do you want to come in later to get the kids off on a school bus? Also, are you in the U.S. or another country? That can make a difference. I was looking for the flexibility of working from home 1-2 days a week for the quiet and ability to focus, as well as on bad weather days. Originally, my company didn't have a formal policy and my manager occasionally allowed it as long as we kept quiet about it. Later, it was formally approved as long as the worker could prove they could still produce at or above the level in the office.

Great question! Working flexibly can be a variety of practices, including but not limited to: 1. Part-time 2. Job sharing 3. Remote or partial remote work 4. Flexible start/stop time 5. Condensed workweek (ex 4-day workweek) 6. Phased retirement 7. Other location or time variables for flexibility in a full-time role
