I'm a current return, to be fair I was in Adv. Manufacturing at Halliburton, so I think it being a 'street cred' move makes sense. The industry is growing and needs people so I don't think it will be an issue you just need to have a reason for leaving in the first place and why you want to come back now, what's your vision for the field and how does that match the company.

What about if someone took off time to care for children? How can they make sure their skills are current enough?

I'm in OT Security, so I'd recommend ICS-CERT courses which are totally free and released by the government as a good starting point. I don't have good recs for IT sec, any else have some ideas?
