How did you get into IT?

Since I was good with computers, I had gotten a job in the IT Department at my college to have some spending money. But I never thought I would end up in IT. I was studying for my degree in Materials Engineering at the time. Before I graduated though, I realized I didn't want to work in a chemistry lab. I had to figure out something else to do. I worked as a project manager and then became an IT Technician. I found that I really liked the customer service aspect, helping people fix their problems. Now as an IT Engineer, I really enjoy helping people automate their business processes and getting rid of bottlenecks with technology. I hope to progress more and more in IT and gain more skills in automation and development.

Funny, my journey was similar. I was also raised using computers from elementary school and beyond. In college I took a part time Help Desk job. I was studying Healthcare Administration and added a second Bachelors of Business Administration, Management as I had a red shirt year in my college sports career. I knew I wanted to be in healthcare and business, but not touching humans as a care provider, haha It was a natural fit to find my way into the business side of my industry, then into project management, and eventually into IT where I am marrying it all together.

I followed in my mother's footsteps. I was a dairy farm kid and with very conservative parents - the sort who feel that the school day and church is the most social contact you should be allowed and I couldn't even hang out with friends outside of that until university. My mother was in tech, teaching programming classes and running the mainframe for a local university at the time. Later she was CTO of one of the 20 largest public school districts in the US. I ended up seeing computers as my ticket out of the isolation.

How cool! My parents aren't in tech jobs but I credit my computer teacher in high school with being my first tech role model.

I stumbled into it. I started at Mindbody as an implementation coach for new clients - I trained people who bought Mindbody how to set it up and use it to run their business. After a couple years I got promoted into more of a project management-ish position and found that it wasn't really my thing. But what I did like about it was putting together requests for our IT teaem to make Salesforce changes. I started learning more about Salesforce and studying it on my own. I had a friend in IT who knew they were opening a new position for an entry-level Salesforce admin, so I went for it, and got it! I just had my 3-year anniversary being on this team last week. :)
