How often are you checking the news?

Every morning, I've been checking my emails and reading the New York Times briefing. I like getting information and staying on top of what's going on, but sometimes I think it can be stressful! I find even when I'm just scrolling on my social media there are news updates everywhere. How have you been balancing reading the news and not? Anyone have any tips on how to manage this?

I check the news at least twice a day. A couple of tips that have helped me, Before checking the news, I say to myself, I am a reporter getting the facts. I really try to separate the facts with my story of worry and see it as such. I then focus on what I can control, (washing my hands often, staying home, supporting my clients, etc). I never, ever, ever (emphasis is important) watch the news after 6pm. It can wreak havoc on your sleep. Before bed every night, I remember three positive things that happened that day (took my daughter bike riding, had an amazing client call, read outside, etc). Zoe, I hope that helps!

I check first thing each morning and that is it. My husband and I have promised each other only one conversation of the day about the pandemic/politics and it has to happen mid-day - not to start our day with it or end our day with it. So we actually have been getting a lot done around the house since our conversations focus more on what to do next - yard work we can get done (with no trips to the hardware stores) or projects around the house we have been putting off. and of course we are reviewing kids school work emails daily and keeping busy with them. its not easy to do, but we keep each other accountable. if one of us starts talking politics at 8pm, the other one says "WHOA - too late for that topic" LOL

This is so sweet - I love that it helps you focus on other things and projects you can do during this time.

I do my best to limit my news consumption to twice a day and temper it with the thought that this will pass. When I do read the news, i seek out only informational content that includes numbers of people recovering, locations where the pandemic is easing, and those that look toward the future state. I find that too many news broadcasts does nothing but cause stress because the emotion of the speaker influences perception. It's less stressful to read the articles where possible.

SERIOUSLY!!! I check it 2x a day and thats it and I do it mid day. don't check it first thing in the morning or right before bed because it just creates to much stress.

Good idea - I definitely should be out of bed and starting my day before I check!

Yes, don't negotiate your health and your peace of mind right now because that is all we have control over.

Haha, I'm a news addict so this is right up my alley. But even I have to discipline myself to only look three times a day; mornings to see what happened overnight; quickly during lunch only for headlines; then after dinner to see daily summaries. And no more than 15 minutes each time. News is changing so rapidly we owe it to ourselves to stay current, but too much focus on it can take over our lives. Focus instead on you, your family and your friends' well-being. Stay healthy everyone!

Limit checking to once or twice a day and never ever at night where it will sit in your subconscious mind and run amuck.
