Yes it takes two to tangle, but it really seems that there are very few incredibly fair or competent bosses.
In my long career, I have only had one. The rest were only adequate at best. But never supportive over their own interests. Not in 40 years has that one stellar boss been duplicated. Do others have the same experience?
I had two bosses that were extremely competent and made me want to work hard for them. They spoiled me for everyone else. I wouldn't call them mentors, exactly, but their common quality is they trusted me entirely to take something and run with it. They were also very fair in their feedback, and I could go to them for help when I found myself in a jam.
I can honestly say I've never had what I consider a stellar boss. The decent ones didn't really know how to mentor me (usually supervised me but not in my area of expertise) but at least supported me and got out of my way. The worst were deliberately trying to tear me down.
I agree 100%. On a more positive note, I think I have had 2 amazing bosses.
that's the worst - so sorry to hear that!
