ASK-A-COACH: Imposter Syndrome

Thank you for creating this group!

I was promoted last year right after the pandemic started and waited until the fall to ask for a raise when things seemed to be consistently moving in a positive direction and our project was moving forward. I was given the run around and told to wait until the end of the year. End of the year came and I still don’t not receive my raise and had to wait several more months after a lot of back and forth. I know I was under paid to begin with, and they gave me a minimal raise which still leaves me under paid for my position. I am now a manager with several people under me (which I am having an issue garnering their respect because I work in a male dominated field and there is a lot of resentment from my peers regarding my promotion which I know I worked extremely hard for and have all of the necessary experience for but receive little to no back up from my superiors and am told to just deal with it). How do I handle going about both situations so that I’m not left in a position to fail but instead am compensated appropriately and earn the respect of my peers?

Hey Anonymous, Congrats on your promotion! Here are a few things I would be solid in: - Since you received a minimal raise but know you are underpaid, do you know the salary range you should be getting? Start here. Be very solid in the number you want, and slightly pad it for the number you will ask for. -Request a meeting with your supervisor and let them know the meeting is to discuss salary compensation. 1. Take lead of the meeting. Hand them a printed sheet of paper with 3 of your most recent wins (in this role) outlined. Physically handing something over shows that you act and work and the level you should be compensated for. 2. Keep everything based on FACTS. No opinions. Paint the timeline picture for them from the point you were promoted and present the facts. State what you would like to be compensated at, based on your marketplace research (or, if you are able to ask your internal HR the salary range for the position) the appropriate salary for the X (level of work you do but speak to it in benefits ex: managing a team to drive sales and revenue for the company). *Resentment from peers- I know this is difficult. This is where your mindset gets stronger. Consider, it is none of your business what they think about you. All that is creating the situation is what you think THEY think about you, and even *IF* you were a mind reader and they were in fact thinking those exact things - you thinking about that is not going to help you move forward. It's going to keep you stuck resenting yourself and feeling even more frustrated about the situation. Decide it's none of your business what they think and stay focused on being the best you can be in your position. If you focus on serving your team and showing up as you - you will gain their respect and trust much quicker than focusing on the negative that they do not respect or resent you. - Why is it a problem that your peers may resent you? Let me know if you need clarification on anything.
