ASK-A-COACH: Imposter Syndrome

Hi ladies!

I recently accepted a job offered and finished my first week. I am very excited about this opportunity as this role is a step up and I had been wanting to move forward in my career from "coordinator" roles to "manager". This role involves a lot of analytics which is something I have some experience in, but not a ton to feel confident in what I will be doing. I worry daily if they made a mistake to hire me as I feel like I am going to fail. Does everyone who starts a new job feel scared/not know how they will do it? I feel stupid not knowing much yet. Help!

I feel your pain. I've been here 4 days and feel I'm doubting myself too much.

Hey Michaela, Congrats on your new job! The good news is, everyone feels this way - especially when starting a new job. It's totally normal for your brain to keep giving you "doubts" because it wants to keep you safe. If you feel like you dont know much yet, start keeping track of all the things you learn and accomplish week to week. I have my clients do this on Friday afternoons as "Friday Hour Done" it will build and show you how much you are actually learning and doing week to week. It's a sneaky way to build your confidence and belief while also keeping track of your wins for the week. If you want to take this deeper, let's chat! https://calendly.com/maeganmillercoaching/apply

Michaela, most everyone who accepts a new role with growth feels out of their comfort zone to a degree and may question 'if they can'. Growth is where the magic happens. Know that your thoughts are what will create your success. The thoughts around 'did they make a mistake' do not serve you. Choose thoughts that are in service to you...what can I learn today that will allow me to get better at my job. Additionally, when in doubt ask. Ask your boss what the expectations are for you in the first 30 days, 60, 90. Then follow up and ask if you are meeting those expectations. Thoughts + expectations = Success. Good luck.

I like that idea - to ask my boss what her expectations are for the next few months and to check back in! Thank you!
