Office Politics

Hello group members. I just attended a live conference with author and consultant, Niven Postma. She is the author of "If You Don't Do Office Politics, Office Politics Will Do You." She teaches office politics are not a bad thing, and you cannot avoid them, even during COVID. Politics are neutral, they are the efforts we engage in to get things done, and are comprised of 4 parts: 1. Influence 2. Relationships 3. Power 4. Perceptions I'm sure we can related to all of these. I appreciate having a different point of view of something that has a negative stigma. My last takeaway (and then I'd like to hear from you about positive office politics) was advice Niven Postma was given, "Some of the most important decisions made about your career are when you're not in the room. So, who is in the room for you and what are they saying?"

This last quote reminds me of Joanna Bloor's perspective. I totally believe this last quote. I got extended on contract for this very reason; I also had done much sleuthing to make sure that lovely manager became my manager, and it paid off. I'll check your resource! Thnx!

Thank you for sharing this re-cap Shawna! This powerful message rings true whether we're in the board room or the living room. Our energetic self perception practically sets the tone for how other will engage with us and I have found it extremely empowering to positively define and actively shape my workplace relations well before I engage with colleagues. The results have been a game changer.
