More and more these days, the conversation about menopause is happening.
There are more articles in the media, more acknowledgements from public figures. This is a great trend!
However, it is still a taboo topic in the workplace.
Are you comfortable talking about menopause with co-workers?
Is your workplace Menopause Friendly?
What policies do you think should be in place to support women experiencing difficult symptoms of menopause?
What challenges have you faced with menopause in your workplace?
Thanks for sharing your story, Leila!
How ironic that I just created a post about this very same subject then came across this group shortly after. I feel we are starting to open up the floor in discussing these life changes more and more. For some women, we are going through a freakish roller coaster ride and especially if there are other health issues piled on to it. I look forward to reading some more posts in this group from others experiences as well. I know for me, its been a bit difficult because my mood swings go from being angry to sobbing like a silly little girl at my desk. If I'm not freezing to death, I'm sweating in my chair like Niagara falls. Lets not forget the weight gain too, ugh, I feel like I am going to explode sometimes and it really affects my focus. In my last position, luckily I was among mostly older women and men who understood the ride because they too are in it or went through or have wives going through it. I don't think we need policies in the workplace for this, but I do feel, having that conversation with your supervisor would be beneficial for you. I feel they could be understanding of what most women of a certain age are going through, as long as it doesn't affect your work quality or productivity, I think they would be willing to work with you in accommodating these wonderful episodes we go through daily.
I think we ARE being more open to this as people who are entering menopause have different expectations on what can be discussed.
But then in the before times I would bring about a hand fan and if anyone commented on it I would reply 'I am a woman of a certain age and this is a required medical device'
