Menopause In The Workplace

Perimenopause Symptoms Still Impact Women Working From Home

I’ve been doing a few speaking engagements about how menopause is impacting working women even during the shutdown. Many of the participants have been sharing their experiences and some are sharing their solutions. Some women talk about how it is easier to deal with hot flashes because they can have a fan blowing on them that is off camera. Great idea! Others have shared that the anxiety that is a common symptom is exacerbated by this pandemic making it difficult to show up well while working. Anxiety is challenging under any circumstances and trying to focus for on-line meetings can be very hard. Doing some breathing exercises - slow deep breathing for a slow count of four for the in-breath and the same for the out-breath - can be very helpful. Meditation is also helpful for many. You can find many meditation apps on-line and ones that include relaxing music are extremely helpful for many women. What menopause symptoms have been particularly difficult for you to manage while working from home? Have you found some solutions that work well for you? What questions do you have that I might be able to help you with?

Hi Christie, I feel your pain! Many of my clients report the same concern. Please feel free to contact me offline if you would like to chat about possible strategies. Yes - yoga and meditation are helpful as is some form of aerobic exercise that bring more blood and oxygen to the body including the brain. (Barbara@atimeofmyown.com)

I suffered for years having hot flashes at work during meetings. It was very embarrassing. I ended up creating a product to help women hide their hot flash symptoms. It is a cooling insert that they hide in their fashion scarf. No one know that they are wearing it and helps to cool them down right away. Here is my website: www.secretscarves.com

Tracy, please contact me off-line. I would love to learn more about your product so that I can tell my clients about it. Many women would find this really helpful. Barbara@atimeofmyown.com

I second the off-screen fan, it's a lifesaver during hot flashes. I find the toughest thing to manage is brain fog. When I need to give an on-the-spot answer, I often can't call up information - and sometimes that includes details about things that I've worked on or led , which makes me worry about credibility. Of course I can recall the info when I have time to slow down and think, search notes, etc. But in the moment, it's really frustrating. My yoga practice helps, but it's not a cure-all.
