Results and Relationships = Burn-Out Antidote
I'm sort of over leadership suggesting that if we just meditate more we'll lower burn-out rates. Yeah, let me add another task to my to-do list.... no thanks.
Meditation/mindfulness is great, but we really need to see more realistic expectations from our leadership and even more, we need more transparency around the results of the hard work we all put in day in and day out. If you work your fingers to the bone and never see the finished results, it's hard to feel proud or motivated to keep going. Do your organizations do a good job of identifying milestones and celebrating them? And I don't mean "20 Year Anniversary" awards, I mean real, regular opportunities to say "Wow, what you do is valued, and here's how!"
And relationships? You don't need to be BFF's with every single coworker, but studies show that strong, nurturing relationships with our coworkers increases happiness, job satisfaction, and productivity. (People tend to fall over from heart attacks a lot LESS, too, which is a huge plus!)

Point number 5 is absolutely critical! Until people have emotional safety ("Do people feel they can speak up? Do they think their contributions are valued? What are the barriers to not just inclusion but true collaboration?") they aren't really going to be bought in. We've all been in situations where it is clear you have to put on your happy face and nod along like you agree. The toll this takes and the burnout this drives is awful for employees and it is bad for the company too as diversity of thought is stifled creating a double hit.
What experience do you all have combating this?
Have you read Amy Edmondson's work on Psychological Safety? It's really eye-opening. I agree, if people can't be open with their thoughts (both on work product related issues and just in general) you're immediately playing defense.
I haven't, but I think I found the book you are referencing - The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth. Thank you for the recommendation!
My feeling is the smart companies are becoming human-centric. Those are the companies of the future. A change in paradigm is definitely in order.
