Long vs. short vacations

Has anyone struggling with burnout found it more helpful to take a day off more frequently or longer pto once in a while to be more helpful recovering? I have a lot of vacation time, commutes to using it this year, and wondering what will help with my impending burnout more...

I am beyond burnt out but last week I had to use what was left of my sick days and some of my PTO to take time off due to my back problems and other health issues so it wasn't really a vacation. However, I did get a lot of writing done so that makes me feel like I did accomplish something however tomorrow it's back to work.

While the stress of the return isn't my favorite, I will always pick a long vacation over a short one. We value travelling internationally, and learning about new cultures. The only short vacations I take are very sport-related (like rock climbing trips).

I like shorter vacations too. It's too hard to get ready and then play catch up. I feel like I'm working twice as hard to relax just a bit. I love taking some long weekends when I can.

Short breaks. I enjoy international travel so I would take a week or a bit more off but honestly about 3 hours into the first day back, the week off would feel like a distant memory because I would return to a million emails and back to back meetings.

I think finding a balance between long and shorts ones is important. Take a Monday or Friday off one or more times a month for a nice long weekend and to get some errands done. Plan a 4-day weekend vacation locally, or take a week going somewhere that rejuvenates you! It depends on how you fill your cup; are you consistently scrambling for time to get in doctor appointments and errands? Take a day or two off. Are you in need of a spa day, quality time with your family, and time to think about YOU instead of work? Take a week...or two! Hope this helps!

It can feel lonely. If you are a director, manager, or team leader you can't talk to your peers at work for fear of being seen as weak. You can't talk with your boss or leadership board because you ...Read more
