Manager
Hi Ladies!
I recently got an interview with a big tech corp for a mid-level position. I heard one of my friends saying that it is not easy to get a job for a person who is in the mid-career transition due to the bias from the market that the senior manager or director would more likely to hire the recent grad or just shorter years of experience professionals to enter the pool because they are easier to be managed or directed. And it is highly possible that my senior might be younger than me, why would they want to hire me rather than a professional younger than me ... I am really shocked to hear this cause I am confident of what I've achieved in the past years. Right now I am told I passed the second round of the interview and the final round will be on the schedule, so I am here wanting to get some encouragements from you ladies and also seek the legitimate and professional advice to clear my concern or self-doubts considering in this critical time of period. I want to hear the fact that I never had chance to be aware of as an outsider. Thank you so much!
Regards,
LM
You got this.. Envision yourself DOING the job.. You are the ONLY right candidate for the job!
Sending you good wishes! Have you heard yet?
Envision them offering you the role! I am mid career and got a big tech job due to my expertise that took 8 months to find me! Don’t underestimate your talent! I’ve got your back! You are fierce and they would be lucky to have you!
As a mid level manager at a tech company, this absolutely depends on the company. My last company, it probably had a pinch of truth. My current company - not so much. Most of my management is around the same age as I am or older, with a sprinkling of younger people who are really skilled.
Look at the people interviewing you. Look at the job posting. No one has 20+ years of experience who is 30. If they want your experience, they need your age. If the people interviewing you will be peers, are they also generational peers!? That can tell you a lot about the company.
FWIW, I turn 50 next month, and I joined my company about a year ago. No concerns at all about my growth options here at my age. You can do this if you want to.
I am rooting for you! I think that more and more organizations are realizing how valuable more experienced employees bring to the table. You got there because of your experience and talent, not your age. :)
I agree with the 'Think Positive" messages. It's impossible to generalize about this sort of thing to all companies. While experience is obviously an important part of the qualifications, fit with the company and the people with whom you will work directly is just as important. They have screened you IN based on your experience and a first interview, so now a lot of it is about how you fit with them. Be yourself, be comfortable, be confident. This is what they should want from a good manager and this is your opportunity to showcase your true, professional self! I hope it works out well for you.
You have got this! Sometimes friends have a good intention of trying to set expectations, but they put doubts in our minds instead. If you've made it to the final round of interviews then the people within the company see your worth and are interested in you, regardless of age. Stand on your accomplishments and know that you are worth it, you are capable and you will absolutely ROCK this final interview. When you do get the job, maybe sit your friend down and let her know the internal struggle her words created for you. That way in the future, maybe she won't say that to another friend. Again, you've got this!
Think positive. It sounds like you bring a tremendous skill set to the table. Focus on how you would be an asset to the company. If they truly want a fresh grad there isn't much you can do. But don't let doubts stop you before you begin.
You got this!
