I just took a new position - my first director position, and I'm excited.
It's on site with a new company, though, and I haven't bought work clothes in several years. I'm fairly tall, going on 50 - I want to appear professional but not old (even though yeah I know I'm officially an Old), as I'm pretty sure most of the team I'm working with is younger. Any suggestions for good places to shop, or references on appropriate office wear? Aerospace industry if that makes a difference.
I've always liked clean lines, simple, but classy. Nothing too wild, or "foo foo". I think a woman looks very business like with this in mind, and as a director I think it would look great. Simple, elegant, but the boss lady. May I ask if you held other director jobs? How exciting!
Jumping in late here but I am tall as well – 43. Some stores I shop at are: WHBM, Cabi (they sell tall), and J Crew. What places do you shop at? Always intrigued when I find long pants. hee heee
Congras on the new position!
I like Stitch Fix. By tailoring your preferences, you can receive items that fit your style and work environment. The items I have received have been age appropriate but not fuddy duddy.
I'm not sure what city you are in, but I buy most of my stuff at Ann Taylor and Banana Republic as well as H&M. All have classic items as well as more trendy items. I'm on the short side tho, at 5'3"
Me too! Those were my go to's when I was going into an office and worked at Deloitte. Check out Stitch Fix. They have a great variety too and you don't have to go shopping.
Marshall's, TJ Maxx, Burlington, Sierra Trading Post, Boston Proper, Ross, Loft & Stein Mart
Congratulations! JCPenney's has lots of career options, including pants for tall gals like ourselves. I would start with black, grey and dark grey pants. I'm a VP at a hospital system and I find that most women, even the younger ones, wear flats with straight pants. COVID has definitely shaped the career fashion world...in my small town, you cannot find work pants at all! Plenty of sweats though...
I like the idea of a capsule wardrobe. This is pretty cool: https://pin.it/1dTTuT6
Good luck in your new adventure!
Congrats on your new position!
If you can, scroll the company's social media and see if you can determine what the female executives VP and above are wearing and copy that look.
As a director in a company that is "dress for your day" that is Jean's casual to professional suits, I have a basic business casual "uniform." I wear black or grey slacks, a white, grey, red, or black blouse, and a grey, black or red blazer. My shoes, 1/2 inch heel loafer matches the color of my pants. My earrings are gold stud huggers.
I like Talbots, Chadwick, and Kasper as by blazer and slacks brands.
Good luck.
Ann Taylor is my go to retailer. They have business casual as well as professional garments and they have great sales. They also have an outlet that has great choices.
Banana Republic is definitely my go-to. Classic pieces - suits, pants/trousers, skirts, blouses that do not go out of style are professional, comfortable, can be worn with flats, low or high heels, dressed up or down. Different pant styles to flatter different body types. Great sales assistance if you want advice/opinions. Reasonably priced for long-lasting, quality clothing and great sales. I agree - buy one suit, black pants and some other mix and match and see how it goes. Also, I've always been told to dress for the position you aspire to - so keep that in mind when assessing the company dress culture.
