Career Advancement
Hello all GenX Women, I recently graduated on August 2019 with a Master in Public Administration. My job is micromanaged with limit opportunities for growth. I am interest in learning more about business and how to incorporate that language into a new profession. Now, paying off grad school loans, I recently decided to register for the U. of Virginia Business Essentials Certificate. It seem like a good investment, I will receive a certificate of completion I hope this is worth $1800 and provide a leg up into my dream job and relocating to DC, Maryland, & Virginia
Hi SaraJ2020, Thank you so much. This is why I love FairyGodBoss, as women we can share our struggles and provide insight. Congrats to you on defending your thesis, I admire women who work in STEM fields, its a lot of hard work and discipline and you are going to finish your program with flying colors. I can see you are resilient, driven and determined. The certification at UVA is done online, the program is self paced and last for about 14 weeks. For the past year I have applied to a few companies in the DMV, unfortunately most of the companies are now on a hiring freeze due to Covid. All we can do is continue to keep one foot ahead of the other.
Take Care.
Congrats on your Masters! Wow, that's interesting. We're in a similar situation, aside from being in different lines of work. Even the loans, grad school, contemplating certifications and relocating. We're both also dealing with micromanagers and no growth opportunities at work--ugh! I also really want to move back to the DC, Maryland region too (or toward DE, NJ), to be closer to help an aging parent (Covid-19 aside). I'm trying to pick up some skills from online courses to increase my marketability. You've done the research and feel that this course will help, then it's worth it. I assume you're getting this certification online? I'd recommend (as I am currently while I wait to defend my thesis), you start researching and/or applying to jobs close to your target area even before you finish the certificate. If you get an opportunity to move sooner than expected for a new job that's close to what you already do, definitely consider it. You'll have an easier time transitioning to the dream job once the certificate is done, when you're already in the area, able to network, etc. Best of luck to you!
