Retention Bonus

My company is about to be acquired and I expect that I will be the CFO. I am going to ask for a retention bonus to stay one year, but have no idea what percentage of my annual salary I should request. Does anybody have experience with this that they are willing to share?

Hello, new to the group here - do you envision having an ongoing role with the new company or do you want to just secure compensation for the year during the transition?

I anticipate staying on with the new ownership, but I know there will be extra work and am looking for compensation.

I have been part of a few companies (tech startups) that have been acquired. At that point in time, I was not in the C-Suite but I was considered senior management and I was part of the acquisition team so I was privy to the ranges that others on the team where using to negotiate. Here are the figures that we used (% of annual salary for staff critical to the long-term success of the new company) - Executives: 45-75% - Senior Management: 30 - 55% - Employees critical for integration: 20 - 45%

About this group

We went to college in the 90s, started our careers when cell phones were a luxury that came with a shoulder bag and fax machines were the newest tech. Here we are now, in what should be the best years of our career facing an ever changing work culture that sees established Boomers still running the show with Millennials expecting to be the next leaders. Meanwhile we just want to take a vacation, make sure the kids get to soccer practice and fund our 401k.
