How is GenX managing?
I feel like many of my peers are doing OK right now, we seem to be natural multi taskers, taking care of kids, work, parents etc. There is a funny meme talking about how we came home alone after school, played some Atari, microwaved some hot pockets and walked to the mall. So true!
On the flipside, with more firms downsizing it's harder than ever to move up the career ladder, few firms are looking to hire seasoned employees with 20 years of experience when you can hire someone with 10 years for a lot less. Will those boomers finally retire and allow us to move up?
I see the same thing. We recently laid off 8 people, and 3 were over 50. At 48, I'm one of the 5 oldest people here. All managers are in their 30's. I'm here to mentor the millennials. We rarely even interview people over the age of 35.
At my job - senior management is fighting to stay employed. It's like the Hunger Games. However they are not adding value - they are talking about how they add value. Listening to your team vent about work is not value. It's like watching sharks from below.
