What Keeps YOU up at night?
Hey you, Gen X women, I would love to know what keeps you up at night?
I read somewhere that being a Gen X women is beyond the sandwich generation and it is much more like being a panini and I thought YES! Sad but true.
The mid-career struggle is real.
The mid-marriage blahs start to sneak in.
Our aging parents.
The demands from our kids.
Financial worries and stresses as we are more than halfway through our careers.
Mine? My daughter's learning disabilities and what else I can always be doing to support her, build her confidence and encourage her growth.
Switching careers among all the other things you listed!
Switching careers mid-life is understandably difficult. Have you started the process? What has it been like for you?
If you want advice on lots of Gen X topics, take a listen to our podcast Make Your Life Magnificent, it can definitely help.
Jackie, I will check it out. It has been interesting to say the least. Part of my search has included the desire to move from a small company to a large company for better benefits, learning opportunities and stability. The stumbling blocks I have run into are perceived lack of my experience in the corporate world and having the confidence to go after positions that would utilize my skillset the best.
I have been very fortunate in my career in that the last 3 positions I have held were presented to me without going through a formal interview process. At the time that was great, however after 20 years of not interviewing I found I was completely without the confidence to participate effectively. Although I have yet to land that perfect job, research, preparation and practice have been beneficial.
Question, do you have a perceived lack of experience or do you think the perception is that you have a lack of experience. I'm wondering if anyone voiced this to you or if it's your inner monologue?
Interview confidence is a whole separate skillset because our nervous system kicks into high gear and it can make us feel foggy and unprepared. You are not alone.
Preparation is 100% accurate to build confidence in the interview and there are some ways to create a more confident self before heading in as well.
Practice behavioral interview questions since those seem the be the ones that cause people to stumble. Develop three or four 'success' stories that showed problem solving, dealing with difficult people/situations, or any other specifics for your job and have them memorized so you can refer to them in some of those questions you'll get.
Jackie, while I don't have kids I second that list. For me it's dealing with my learning disabilities and how they hold me back sometimes. While I have successfully coped, I know that it can affect the way I'm viewed.
Reach out if I can offer any tips, I will.
Thank you for that offer Lpmccartney - I may take you up on that. Learning disabilities are more common than we think and unfortunately there isn't a one size fits all solution.

Great list --- I second those!
