Hi Ladies, I'm new to the group and excited to be here.
I will be graduating from the data science boot camp at the Flatiron School in 2 weeks (whoop whoop) and am a little overwhelmed. I now have a work gap, I'm entering a new field after being in marketing, and I never really got the hang of the networking thing (but I'm trying). Does anyone have any advice? Know where I can find a mentor? Want to higher the human equivalent of a dalmatian (smart, excitable but nervous)? Know any forums about what working in spaces with such large gender gaps is like? Any tips would be highly appreciated!
Welcome to the group Anjanette and congrats! I love the advice that was shared about reaching out to alumni. Also, check to see if there are any alumni groups on social media - I'm in a few groups of my own and people are always posting jobs/resources/etc. If no groups exist, you could think about starting one for others who are in the program with you. It's likely that others are feeling the same way and wondering the same things - so you could create that space to share ideas/resources.
On another note - the Fairygodboss Inspiration Summit is coming up on April 13 and there are a few sessions you might be interested to tune in to -- Finding Mentors and Sponsors, Transitioning into a Career You Love, It Takes a Village: Growing Female Leaders in the Tech Industry. congrats!! so exciting :) first i'd recommend reaching out to the flatiron alumni network (I think they have one) and see if anyone who's already gone through the program and landed a job might be able to help make an intro for you or let you know about an opening in their company. since they've already gone through the program themselves they'll probably be more likely to help out than a random person. next you can start looking into companies that offer additional training on the job since they'll probably be more likely to hire you even if you don't have any previous work experience in the field. hope that helps!
Those are great ideas, thanks!
