What's the best career advice you've ever received?
I'll start! A manager early in my career advised me to keep a running list of my accomplishments throughout each year (like a brag list!) so that I could discuss all of those things during performance reviews. It's often difficult to look back on an entire year and try to remember everything you've achieved, so keeping a running list has worked wonders!
This is great advice. Thank you!
Don't be shy about your ambitions and career aspirations. A senior leader in my company said that in a company like ours where there is not a lack of great talents, they were looking for people that had the self confidence to call out that they wanted to develop and grow into a very senior position. We (myself included) have a tendency only to talk about the next potential role, but we should talk about our "target end-role" and from there discuss possible steps to achieve that
+1 on the brag list! Also, one piece of advice (for newer folks in their career or at a company) that has helped me determine how long to stay at any one organization is to understand the day to day tasks of the executive team and decide (or listen to your instincts about) whether that is a desirable role for you. If not, a pivot might be in order!
Bet on yourself! Women, in particular, tend to underestimate their abilities and only apply for jobs they're 100% qualified for. If you see a job description for a role you think you'd rock, go for it and sell yourself!
Don't be afraid to say no
