Moving for a Role

In March I'll be moving to a new city for a role and I thought this was a good place to reach out and ask for advice. Has anyone ever moved to a brand new place, where they didn't really know anyone, for a job? What worked well for you? What do you wish you had done differently? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I've moved pretty regularly for work, mostly to places where I know no one. I usually look at it as an opportunity to start afresh, clean slate etc. I too have a few things I need to sort out quickly - for me, a home of my own is a must, somewhere I can retreat from the world in a place I like. Then, a supply of books (whether library or decent bookshop), supermarket, etc. I found moving back to Ireland was far easier than moving around in England - people are more likely to randomly invite you along to stuff :) But, take it easy, take your time, assess what your need for social contact is (mine is minimal to say the least!) and see what your budgets are like.

Thank you! I didn't think about sorting out those things that I need in my life first - so I'm glad you both brought it up.

I moved from NYC to NC in the fall for a job, with nothing else to really go on. I made sure to have one full week in the new city before I started my job, which I think was really helpful. I also kept things pretty easy on myself the first month or two--didn't try to rush into anything, it was all new and I took it as it happened. The things that were important to me emerged in that time (priorities: specialty grocery stores and a gym I liked going to, a library card. Less of a priority: trendy downtown bars). I wish I had been in a better financial position when moving, but that's why I was moving, to set myself up for the future! But that really made me feel overwhelmed, like I didn't know where to go or what to do and the only options were to pay for events or classes etc (Particularly since I moved right when the weather was getting bad and most activities were indoor ones). Mostly, tho, I think it was important to be patient with it--I still am. It takes a long time to move somewhere new and find a whole life again.

Thanks! I am planning to move out a week before starting, so I'm glad to hear that helped :)
