What computer science positions exist that combine tech and charity or social work?
I'm currently a software developer doing government contract work, but I've recently realized that I want to work in a job that has a bigger and more direct impact on the world around me. It could be helping the community, the environment, anything. The issue is that I don't really know what options are out there for someone with my experience, other than making websites or security for charities, which isn't really what I'm looking for. I have both technical skills and soft skills, and I'm even willing to step away from software if necessary. I thought it would be good to ask if anyone knew what types of positions are out there that use skills like mine and have the kind of impact and purpose I'm missing in my life.
...too, you may also want to look into social impact consulting firms such as FSG or Dalberg which work with companies, government agencies and NGOs to help them solve pressing social problems using a combination of business and social sector strategies.
The American Red Cross has non-profit career and job opportunities that involve using technology to help fulfill their mission.
Larger nonprofit organizations have IT departments with a variety of positions. I appreciate your desire to work for a mission bigger with an impact on the world. My entire 30+ year career has been in nonprofits and I have a Masters degree in Nonprofit Management. I’d like to help manage your expectations. While mission driven by design, many nonprofit cultures are toxic, often underpaying and overworking employees (illegally in many cases) in the name of the mission. You have a much needed skill for the sector, so should have no problem making the change. Please research organizations you apply to, screening for culture, pay, and working conditions. Of course there are also many great organizations out there as well. Proceed with eyes wide open.
Check out Blackbaud. They create software just for nonprofit organizations .
You might look into healthcare? Not exactly charity work, but can have more of a social impact. There are companies that create electronic health records, hospitals/health system, regional health information exchanges, federally qualified health clinics, all of these spaces need tech talent and ultimately impact patients (and would be able to pay you).
Smaller nonprofits/social services often can't afford (or have a need) for a full time software developer (or tech person) unless they are tech-focused. You might look on idealist.com for some ideas, but also look into your local area-associations of non profits, united way, etc. may give you some ideas.
