Advice for starting career in media
Hi everyone! I recently graduated with a degree in mass media / interactive media, and to be honest, I am struggling to find an entry-level position in the industry right now. I have experience in television production (worked at on-campus TV station), post-production, digital photography and editing, and have even done a bit of work in motion graphics. I also have experience in social media from an internship. I guess I'm here to just ask for advice. If any of you have any advice on how to continue building my portfolio or where to start out or anything, I would appreciate it so so much.
Do you have a website that showcases your work and highlights what kind of value you bring to the companies?
If you have any statistics or case studies that show how your direct work or involvement has generated a positive ROI for any company, definately highlight that because that is what every company is looking for!!!
Hi there. If you aren't already, I would recommend getting signed up on some industry specific freelance sites like Mandy.com. When I was first starting out as a freelance screenwriter I found a lot of opportunities on that site - they are temporary gigs mostly but can help get you hooked up with a specific position on a specific project to keep building your resume and make some money. Since you have skillsets in social media and graphics/editing it may also be possible to find an entry level job in a tech company or similar to give you that steady pay check while you work to build out your chosen career path... it takes time. Be patient with yourself and open to taking jobs outside of your preferred industry to help foot the bill while you focus on your art. It an be a game changer to take the financial pressure off. (If you haven't read Elizabeth Gilbert's 'Big Magic' I can't recommend it enough on this topic of art vs paycheck). Hope that's helpful!
