You'll work as part of the US leg of ABB Research, which shares worldwide research and development responsibility for several important technology areas, including protection, control and optimization, power electronics control, switching devices, software and connectivity, energy storage, etc. This position is based out of our Raleigh, NC facility.
Your responsibilities
Contribute to DC (Direct Current) distribution and buildings technology research, including but not limited to building and community energy management, protection and control, integration of renewables and energy storage, and building grid interactions
Contribute to the development, test, validation, and certification of DC protection and control technologies to enable low emission and low carbon building/microgrid
Participate into internal/external collaboration to demonstrate ABB's technology leadership in the DC distribution protection technology areas
Help with pilot application of the developed technologies on the distribution network and residential and commercial buildings premises
Travel to collaborate with internal/external partners
Generate intellectual properties for ABB
Publish results in peer reviewed journals and attend top conferences sponsored by IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Power Engineering Society and other related professional societies
Your background
Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and minimum 8 years of experience required
PhD in Electrical Engineering with 5 years of experience strongly preferred
Extensive experience with some of the following technical areas:
Low and medium voltage DC distribution and buildings technologies, including but not limited to control of power electronics converters, DC voltage control, DC protection devices and algorithms, power and energy management, and modeling and simulations of these types of systems
Familiar with Matlab/Simulink, PSCAD, Modelica, Energy Plus, Opal-RT or similar modeling platforms
Familiar with communication protocols, such as Modbus, REST-API, MQTT, BACnet, LonTalk, OPC UA, DNP3, or Zigbee protocols
Familiar with one or more programming languages, such as Python, C++, C#, JavaScript, or other programming languages
Experience collaborating with US government (example DOE), OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) vendors, electric utilities, national laboratories and academia
Good knowledge of some of the following technical areas: Low and medium voltage DC microgrid design and operations, AC and mixed microgrid design and operation, Building management/automation system,
Hardware in the loop setup and validation, Machine learning (ML) techniques and/or other AI techniques
Experiences in one or more of the following technical areas: Protection and control devices/controllers, Edge/cloud platforms, Digital signal processing techniques, Programming logic controller, Relational database design and SQL programming, Microsoft Visual Studio or similar software development platforms
Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
