uality product that meets the users needs. The discipline that executes a robust process of design, creation, and optimization of systems, consisting of identification and quantification of system requirements, creation of alternate system design concepts, performance of design trade studies, selection and implementation of the best designs and verification that the design is properly integrated and executed. Process that proceeds from concept to production to operation.
Impacts departmental operations and responsible for planning/execution. The role has some autonomy but is focused on execution of activities within an operating discipline covered by standard functional practices and procedures. Some judgment may be required but this is typically with guidance.
Job Description
We are looking for Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineer to join our global FACTS (NPI) team. The position will be based in Tampere, Finland.
GE Vernova Grid Solutions delivers mainly high power (>100MVAr) Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) as Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOM) and Static Var Compensators (SVC), Fixed Series Capacitors (FSC) and Synchronous Condensers (SC). These are used to control power system voltage and reactive power flow as well as to improve the power system stability and transmission system efficiency. FACTSFLEX™ devices are also typically used to improve the integration of renewables to the power system making the future power system more sustainable. The Center of Excellence of power electronics-based products STATCOM and SVC is in Tampere, Finland, while the Center of Excellence of FSC and SC is in Saratoga Springs, United States. Our main products maintained in Tampere are FACTSFLEX Classic™, FACTSFLEX GFM™ and FACTSFLEX GFMe™.
In this position, you will mainly be doing research and development around SVC and STATCOM solutions and you will be reporting to FACTS NPI Program Manager.
Key tasks:
Your main task is to research and develop optimized reactive power compensator systems. Target is to create innovative compensator configurations and control algorithms which allows the compensator to meet more demanding customer requirements. These requirements may for example be related to losses and harmonic emissions, reactive power range, reliability, noise or magnetic field emissions and integration of energy storage to be a part of the compensator solution. You will work with our product FACTSFLEX GFMe™, which is Grid Forming STATCOM with energy storage.
In this very versatile role, you have possibility to become recognized expert in the field of overall system design of the reactive power compensator. Your areas of expertise will include:
calculation of optimal configuration for reactive power compensator
analysis of losses and harmonic emissions
analysis of reliability
analysis and design of compensator control algorithms
integration of different components, e.g. energy storage to the STATCOM solution
overall understanding of electric subsystem design
FACTS devices and especially power-electronic based FACTS
Power system engineering
In this role, you will be focusing on the product development as well as future products and technologies. Therefore, you will have the possibility see larger technology trends in the field of electrical power engineering. Due to the innovative nature of the role, you are expected to contribute on patents and scientific publications. This role gives you real opportunity to work for the more sustainable and green future power system.
The research and development work will comply with the good design practices starting from rigor specification definition to implementation, validation and documentation. Although you are joining to the NPI team, you will have close collaboration with the local System Design Engineering team Finland as well as HVDC NPI team located in Stafford, UK and with our energy storage supplies in USA, Europe and Asia.
