About the Role
As a member of the Data Platforms and Engineering Services team, the Senior Principal Engineer is a key driver of the technology architecture, design, implementation, operation, and support of the data technology and platforms needed to enable Mastercard to leverage the unique and valuable data assets we provide to drive revenue, regulatory compliance, and new product development.
The technology complexity involved is enormous, given that the Mastercard Data Warehouse is the largest shared service of the company, in terms of size of the data assets, the number of physical servers, the number of transactions stored, and how many products and lines of business leverage the data in the warehouse. This role will help lead the continued evolution and modernization of our data platforms and data engineering practices to ensure Mastercard stays at the competitive forefront in the industry.
As a Senior Principal Engineer, this role will:
-Set and drive the technical vision and architecture for the Data Platforms and Engineering Services ecosystem -
oAs the technical architect, this role will drive the vision and architectural design, including dependent services, service interactions, and policies.
oThis includes identifying ways to make demonstrable progress in the short-term, while keeping an eye on the vision to ensure we are setting ourselves up for long-term success.
oBe the "technical face" of the Data Platforms and Engineering Services team across Mastercard and be able to easily translate and present complex technical topics to senior business leaders.
oChallenge the status quo where necessary and build consensus around those differential opinions.
-Partner on critical efforts and liaise across Mastercard -
oWork closely with team members on all vendor evaluations and be a key stakeholder and voice in any build vs. buy decisions.
oConsult across teams and across program lines to identify synergies and reuse opportunities.
-Solve tough problems and pave the path for team members -
oLead projects to prototype and prove concepts for new technologies, application frameworks, and design patterns.
oEnsure that solutions are built for scale and are applicable on our hybrid public-private cloud environment, addressing the needs of all relevant stakeholders (including M&As).
oTackle intrinsically hard problems, venturing beyond comfortable approaches when necessary, and are adept at "Thoughtful Risk Taking".
oBalance trade-offs between competing interests; adapt approach to meet the needs of the team, project, and product; bring clarity to complexity and demonstrate smart ways to simplify.
oHave strong ownership of the team's software and be deep in the maintenance characteristics, runtime properties and dependencies including hardware, operating system, and build.

oMentor, guide, and coach software engineers and leads in the team to improve engineering productivity, quality, and technology policy compliance.
oWork with existing Principals and management to set engineering principles and federate them throughout the program
oAssist people managers in the talent management process in hiring strong engineering talent and running performance evaluations.
oSeek technical knowledge and educate the team about trends, technologies, and approaches.
oEngage with external technical communities to extend our reach and benefit from the discovery outside of Mastercard and our industry.
All About You
• You have current, deep, hands-on data and software engineering experience - architecture, design, and implementation - on large scale, distributed systems
• Deep Big Data experience and familiarity across industries / technologies and building data pipelines (Hadoop, Spark, Hive, Kafka, Cloudera, Impala).
• Experience with cloud data warehouse / Lakehouse technologies.
• Cloud experience and familiarity with emerging cloud technologies and tools / integration best practices (Databricks, Snowflake, AWS, Azure).
• You are strong in databases, data technologies, and multiple modern programming languages; you also have proficiency with cloud technologies (IaaS, PaaS, serverless technology, NoSQL databases), micro-service design, CI/CD, DevOps.
• You have a demonstrated record of success as a technical leader.
• Your communications and technical skills make you a recognized leader and mentor.
• You are passionate about new technology and can dive deep to form an objective evaluation and opinion.
• You have strong written and verbal English communications skills - prior speaking/blogging engagements in technical forums and conferences.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, or equivalent, or work-related experience. Suitable advanced degree preferred.
Location Requirements: This is a hybrid position available in Mastercard's Arlington, Dublin, NYC, or O'Fallon locations. Relocation is not available for this position.
Pay Ranges:
Arlington, Virginia: $230,000 - $368,000 USD
O'Fallon, Missouri: $200,000 - $320,000 USD
New York City, New York: $240,000 - 384,000 USD
