    Position summary

    help assess and articulate economic trends at the national, state, and local level. These data sets and the output indicators and trends will be used to assess business risk in a manner that is relevant to insurance sector outcomes. The output will be used to provide risk advisory services for the firm's clients.

    Ideally, the candidate will have experience or knowledge with building and using complex econometric and related models. They will have strong knowledge of public economic data sources, and experience working with large sets of noneconomic data. They will have experience building bespoke indicators using a mix of data sources and often derive creative methods to create new economic indicators. The ideal candidate will be an expert in data science, using large data, modeling, and economics. The candidate will also have knowledge of artificial intelligence tools and how they leverage applications to scale up the delivery of their analysis and modeling.

    The candidate will work closely with, and support, the Head of the Global Insights Center to ensure that the output of their research and output aligns with the team and organization's goals and strategies. The candidate will also interface with the firm's leadership and underwriting units across the enterprise. The purpose will be to explain economic data and insights at the national and local level to help drive the firm's strategy and underwriting decisions. The candidate will contribute to the Insights Center various research publications, which will be distributed both internally and externally. In addition, the candidate will determine new avenues of conducting research, generating content, and building models that can further the firm's overall goals and initiatives.

    Responsibilities:

    • Develop bespoke economic indicators identifying unique trends and outcomes at the national, state, and local level broken out by industry.

    • Create information and analytics that can be used by internal and external stakeholders to identify business trends and risks.

    • Utilize creative methods to create a stronger understanding of economic risk, and its implications for industries/businesses in the US.

    • Correlate the findings to implications for the insurance sector.

    • Access publicly available economic data at the national, state, and local level and overlay with other noneconomic internally available data sets.

    • Create methods and systems to integrate and curate the various data sets from their sources.

    • Work with internal data engineering partners to source appropriate data.

    • Build models to create localized trends and the bespoke economic indicators.

    • Create presentations and determine unique new methods of displaying the data findings.

    • Develop views on the national, state, and local economies.

    • Ascertain new methods of injecting findings into the firm's operations, strategy, underwriting, and financial planning.

    • Join the team's leadership in meeting with clients to present findings and outlooks.

    • Develop presentations and briefings that can be utilized by the firm's external partners.

    • Contribute to the Global Insights Center's external research publications.

    • Prepare white papers outlining medium term views on key aspects of the US economy.

    Candidate Profile:

    • Ten plus years of relevant work experience as a data scientist or data engineer with a very strong knowledge of economics and quantitative techniques.

    • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship

    • Experience turning large data sets into economic indicators

    • Experience at a financial institution, fintech firm, consulting firm, data science or data engineering firm, rating agency, or large corporation.

    • Strong understanding of the US economy.

    • Knowledge of building complex models.

    • Effective communication and writing skills to further research publications.

    • Experience briefing senior executives on complex topics.

    • Strong process management discipline. Establishes priorities, anticipates problems, determines completion dates, knows and communicates the status of assignments; manages time effectively; uses the services of others effectively.

    • Team player with a strong collaborative orientation; ability to build strong relationships across an organization.

    • Entrepreneurial and creative focus to determine new work streams, initiatives, and deliverables that could be of value to internal parties and external clients.

    • Ability to deal with ambiguity in a matrixed organization; ability to guide, influence and navigate effectively with different constituencies in achieving company goals.

    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

    • Degree in computer science, data science, math, or economics is preferred.

    This role has a Hybrid work arrangement. The hire must reside in Hartford, CT or New York, New York and will have the expectation of working in an office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

    Compensation

    The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
    $140,800 - $211,200
