    As a Small Commercial Excess & Surplus (E&S) Underwriter, you will:

    • Act with high levels of underwriting authority, expertly applies and executes on appropriate Underwriting and Pricing guidelines to achieve Profit and Growth objectives for the E&S binding book.

    • Key player in territory book management and performance of wholesale partners.

    • Be professionally demanding, demonstrate mastery level underwriting acumen, superior risk / reward decision-making skill, and portrays a propensity for continuous learning.

    • Behave as a peer leader, coaches and mentors underwriters at all levels, embraces and leads change, drives continuous improvement, and advocates for underwriting and product innovation

    • Accurately develop and price individual risks, analyze loss and risk information, and recognize "red flags" and file inconsistencies in order to write profitable commercial business.

    • Partner with assigned partner manager to achieve to achieve profit and growth objectives.

    • Develop and maintain relationships with assigned brokers to synthesize the value proposition and drive optimal business results in a highly competitive marketplace.

    • Plan and prioritize work activities to achieve desired results within necessary time frames.

    • Work closely with brokers to stay current and ahead of market conditions.

    • Collaborate with head of underwriting, product, and actuary to help influence/update underwriting guidelines, coverages, and rates that impact your territory.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience

    • A minimum of 5 years Excess & Surplus underwriting experience is required

    • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with all internal and external business partners

    • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills

    • An ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions.

    • High energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit

    • Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills

    • Goal-oriented and delivers outcomes

    • Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win

    • Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills.

    • The Hartford is proud to offer a hybrid work location model that is designed to support flexibility. Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday are designated as enterprise core days, when we expect most employees in hybrid work arrangements to come to the office. This position can be remote for selected candidates not near to a Hartford office.

    Compensation

    The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

    $77,120-$135,960

    The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
