    The Hartford's Environmental Division is seeking an Underwriter or Senior Underwriter to underwrite operational and transactional site pollution business and Contractors Pollution Liability business. The Underwriter's primary focus will be on growing and sustaining a profitable book of business through retail and wholesale insurance brokers in the assigned region, though business may be accepted from brokers nationwide. Accounts will range from mid-market to large and highly complex risks.

    Responsibilities:
    • Achieving new business and renewal retention goals.
    • With guidance from manager and/or senior underwriter, establishes relationships with a focus on key brokers. Market environmental division products and acquire submissions through insurance brokers; develop and manage close broker relationships.
    • Underwrite new and renewal policies within assumed underwriting authority including negotiating insurance policy terms and conditions. Develop and maintain appropriate documentation for associated underwriting files.
    • Applies all applicable Underwriting guidelines when making recommendations on individual accounts.
    • Learns The Hartford's value proposition to best position the company for success, gain awareness for other segments of The Hartford.
    • Some travel required.

    Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
    • Senior Underwriter title: 3+ years of environmental underwriting experience
    • Underwriter title: 1 + years of directly related environmental consulting or environmental underwriting experience.
    • Strong knowledge of environmental liability insurance exposures, coverages and underwriting with a focus on site pollution liability products.
    • Proven ability to review technical environmental and legal documents (i.e. Phase I/II Environmental reports, Environmental Regulatory correspondence and reports, Purchase and Sale agreements, etc.).
    • Candidates with Environmental engineering and consulting backgrounds preferred.
    • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with all internal and external business partners.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills.
    • An ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions.
    • High energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit.
    • Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills.
    • Goal-oriented and delivers outcomes.
    • Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win.
    • Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills.

    Salary $76,320 -$144,840

    Location:
    This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near our Chicago or Denver office will have the expectation of working in the office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.

    Compensation

    The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

    $76,320 -$144,840

    The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
