    Position summary

    This role will be the portfolio leader, holding one of the highest levels of authority, working with the leadership team to advance our acumen and grow our wrap-up book of business. Working with executive leadership, the successful candidate will identify and frame strategic issues and drive the planning and execution of program initiatives. This role will have a significant impact on driving superior financial results, building employee engagement, and creating long-term customer value along with serving as a collaborative expert with colleagues, both experienced and lesser experienced, to build expertise across the unit.

    In addition to the construction specific teammates, this role will partner closely with the Middle & Large Commercial (MLC) Office of the Chief Underwriting Officer (OCUO) and Enterprise Field Leaders (Division Executives and Regional VPs) to accelerate the growth of this book of business along with establishing a credible presence within the industry while fostering a risk embracing culture. This role will engage with the Construction Regional Vice Presidents enabling risk decisions and training and empowering the underwriting team to do the same. In addition to collaboration noted above, the candidate is expected to partner with product, actuarial, service, and claim teams. The external distribution and client base is critical in this position.

    Specific Responsibilities

    Indirect people Leadership, Portfolio Leadership, Financial Reporting & Operating Routines

    • In partnership with the leadership team, specifically the Construction RVPS, will own the development and execution of operating routines across the Wrap-Up unit.

    • Develops and maintains a routine cadence on financial reporting including monitoring profit, pricing adequacy, loss cost trends, outlook targets across assigned territories while developing proactive solutions to address variance

    • Develops routine prioritization & monitoring with the Line of Business teams to ensure execution of strategic product priorities

    • Engages with the other directors and Underwriting Officers to ensure seamless execution of underwriting initiatives developed across the portfolios

    • Implements underwriting strategies, including pricing, models, geography, owner/contractor splits.

    • Leads and continuously improves underwriting authority in partnership with the HOC and CUO; engages as the referral leader for the wrap up Portfolio

    • Provides input to overall Middle Market underwriting and product training agendas to advance our underwriting acumen and grow our book profitably

    • Develops execution strategies for achievement of operating plan commitments

    • Advances portfolio management initiatives by partnering with Actuary, Product, Data and Analytics, Finance, Claims, Risk Engineering, Actuarial, Compliance, Legal, Operations, IT, and other resources through consistent application of Account Segmentation, Pricing Benchmarks, LOB, Industry/Geography optimization, Pipeline, Staffing Models, Referral Metrics, Authority, etc.

    • Operating routines are embedded into management system throughout all levels of the team/org

    Product & Underwriting Leadership

    • Responsible for establishing and maintaining close partnership with Product and Actuary to inform business and anticipate actions on pricing trends, loss reserve trends, threats and opportunities

    • Develops meaningful partnerships and shared vision for business outcomes

    • Empowers and trusts teams to make sound risk decisions

    • Provides thought leadership and support to product initiatives

    • Stewards the portfolio and book of business mix in overall compliance with The Hartford's guidelines, policies, service standards and levels of authority

    • Builds thought partnership to drive product strategy and roadmap, appetite expansion, pricing, and service capabilities

    • Develops strategies to advance profitable growth

    • Responsible for planning process across geographic footprint that includes product and actuary outlook inputs

    • Lead strategic profit improvement initiatives, if needed

    • Partners with Quality Management (QM) & Learning teams and Underwriting Managers in leading QM initiatives and action plans to ensure: o

    o Improve results and/or achievement of quality standards

    o Risk evaluation, pricing, terms & conditions, and documentation to standard

    Distribution Management

    • Strategically engages externally to enhance sales culture, support low end portfolio consolidation opportunities, and assist in large account stewardship

    • Develops and nurture wrap-up strategic alliances with distribution partners and clients

    • Partners with other Enterprise business leaders to define countrywide distribution strategies, including performance expectations and sales plans; partners with Sales & Distribution and field resources to execute on relationship management as it relates to top partners engagement and execution

    • Provide input to underwriting strategies and practices with specific distribution partners as needed

    • Provides leadership to industry specific sales and marketing initiatives; provides direction in the development of specialized external and internal marketing collateral

    Strategy

    • Partner with HOC and CUO in strategic roadmap for profitable growth

    • Help create clear vision/plan within the P&L

    • Support and maintain efficient underwriting process in partnership with operations, IT and underwriting to enable scale and efficiency in low complexity lines

    • Work closely with all Directors and Underwriting Officers in MLC to ensure consistency and regional expertise

    • Build thought partnership to drive product strategy and roadmap, appetite expansion, pricing, and service capabilities

    Leadership & Talent Management

    • Provides education, development, and guidance to further differentiated capabilities, including claims, risk engineering, product, operations and underwriting talent

    • Responsible to drive our roadmap both internally and externally - with goal to differentiate The Hartford to grow our business

    • Champions continuous improvement, routines and capacity management

    • Develop and assist in onboarding of Underwriting talent (trainees, experienced hires, leaders, etc.)

    • Leads talent and adjusts to changing workload/demands throughout the year

    • Champions talent movement in and out of team with proactive succession and talent planning

    • Champions DEI in all operating routines

    • Demonstrates transparency and active listening amidst conflict to drive long-term solutions

    Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree required: CPCU or other relevant industry designation preferred

    8+ years Commercial P&C insurance industry experience required, with background and expertise in underwriting loss sensitive and Wrap-ups, product development, and field management

    Strong industry reputation as both a technical and externally facing market leader

    Compensation

    The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

    $134,480-$201,720
