Being a New Yorker is a big part of my identity and I will deeply appreciate it no matter where I go in life. People can find their best selves in a new city, whether it is New York or another metropolis. For recent grads who are coming to a new, big city after graduation, there are several considerations to keep in mind. Let’s discuss…

1. Side hustles are a real thing.

It can be quite expensive to live somewhere like D.C., San Francisco or New York. But don't let the cost scare you away from coming to town. Instead, you should be determined to make more money. Having a side hustle (or two) really makes sense when moving to the city, and you won't be alone. People tend to be busy boosting their professional portfolios 24/7. That brings me to my next point...

2. Resourcefulness is the name of the game.

In addition to considering a side hustle, it is important to have a “scrappy” or resourceful mindset when you move to a new city. There are millions of people going in many directions, and if you are moving here to make your dreams come true, you need to know that you are not alone. There are many people moving here to start a business, start their dream job or create their ideal lifestyle. If you need to have your voice heard or stand out in this chaotic ballet, then you need to remember that networking will always be a game changer. Making your dreams come true will require you to develop relationships, learn the rules, grow your skills and grind like crazy.

3. Count your coins (over and over again).

Living in an expensive city, it is key to know your numbers. How much does it cost for you to live every month? How much money do you spend on take-out? How much is your monthly Starbucks spending habit? Even if you don’t know how to balance a checkbook, you need to set up a budget that you stick to. Otherwise, you will risk putting yourself in financial harm if you are living beyond your means.

4.  Always embrace a new adventure.

Growing up, one of the reasons I loved New York City was the abundance of opportunities. As you explore new professional, career-oriented and social activities in your new city, you are embarking upon a new adventure. You never know where these opportunities will lead you. This is both exciting and terrifying for many people. If you are moving here and you are questioning how easy it will be for you to adjust to the city, I urge you not to worry. I encourage you to get a MetroCard and explore the city. There are so many hidden pockets in the city to discover and fall in love with. Moving to this city will be a life-changing adventure. Embrace it!
