Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Kaitlin Mathews, Global Key Account Director at Thomson Reuters.

Reflecting on her time at the company, Kaitlin tells us how grateful she is for the career journey she’s had during her 10 years at Thomson Reuters. “Thomson Reuters is an amazing place to be if you want to have upward mobility in your career,” says Kaitlin. And this is something that Kaitlin knows firsthand.

After entering the company as a Sales Representative, Kaitlin started her journey by selling Thomson Reuters’ Practical Law product to law firms. “It was an amazing experience working with wonderful and incredibly smart individuals,” she recalls. “I experienced success like I hadn’t ever before in my professional sales career.”

For her next step, Kaitlin’s mentor empowered her to take charge of her career journey and explore new options. As a result, Kaitlin decided to take on a new internal role as part of Thomson Reuters’ global account team, which sells to larger law firms. From here, Kaitlin continued to utilize Thomson Reuters’ strong support for mentorship and internal mobility. For instance, after working with a mentor to discover more growth opportunities outside her immediate team, Kaitlin decided that her next leap would be to move to their corporate team.

As a result, “for the last five years, I’ve been on our corporate side,” Kaitlin notes. “Since I listened to that amazing mentor, I’m now in a Global Key Account Director role, working with nine of our largest clients in the Fortune 500, spanning across legal, risk, and tax. There are not many individuals at Thomson Reuters who manage all product lines, and I am so grateful that I am one of them because of that mentor.”

In the video below, Kaitlin shares more about why she loves working at Thomson Reuters. We also provide lightly edited highlights from the video discussion in the following article.

How would you describe the culture at Thomson Reuters?

The culture at Thomson Reuters is one of my favorite things about working here. We have amazing people, amazing leaders, and amazing colleagues — which is the main reason that I continue to stay at Thomson Reuters. Some of the other things we have that I’m really proud of are:

  1. Our internal mobility. I am a product of this, and I know so many others who are products of the internal mobility structure and support that we have here.

  2. We are global. We’re in 70+ countries. We have global colleagues and an amazing global collaboration structure.

  3. Our focus on our mental health and wellbeing. Thomson Reuters offers two mental health days off per year, which is amazing.

  4. Professional development. Thomson Reuters is committed to improving our skill sets in and out of the office. For example, in terms of developing us as employees and people, they offer Global Learning Days — today is actually one of those days.

  5. Flexibility. The fact that I can have such success while working and still be present for my family says so much about the amazing things that Thomson Reuters offers in terms of culture.

What is your favorite thing about Thomson Reuters?

Besides the amazing earning potential — I am in sales after all — the next thing is our people. By people, I don’t just mean my amazing colleagues and leadership. I mean our customers, our client base who trusts us day in and day out, and our extensive partner network that we get to work with every single day. I am so grateful for all of the people who make my job fun.

How does Thomson Reuters support you?

Thomson Reuters wants to see you succeed long-term financially. They have an amazing 401k matching program and an employee stock option purchase plan, which I encourage all employees to take part in.

In addition to that, there is so much flexibility within Thomson Reuters. The fact that I can experience the success I have while also being able to bring my seven-year-old to a soccer game — I don’t know many companies that can offer that.

There’s also so much support in terms of developing us as individuals. Currently, I’m in a leadership development program sponsored by Thomson Reuters. They really want to see you succeed, and they support you every step of the way.

What advice would you give to other women looking to work at Thomson Reuters?

My first word of advice is please apply. It’s an amazing place to work, whether you’re a mother or a professional who wants to surround herself with incredibly smart and talented colleagues.

This is the place you want to be if you want to have multiple careers in one company. This is the place if you want to have uncapped earning potential.
