Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Meagan Boson, the Vice President of Business Performance at Oldcastle Infrastructure, a CRH company.

When asked what her favorite thing about working at CRH is, Boson tells us that while there are many reasons, her favorite aspects are the boundless opportunities. “I've been here for just a little over two-and-a half years, during which I've had the opportunity to work on global teams and global projects,” she explains. “I've met people up, down, and across the organization. I get to learn new things, and that is something that's really exciting to me.

It’s something that brings me back to work every single day — knowing that as long as I come to work, I bring my authentic self to work, and I put my effort in and show results, I will always have an opportunity to continue to learn and grow.”

And Boson is certainly empowered to grow a lot as the first person to hold her current position. As the VP of Business Performance at Oldcastle Infrastructure, “I get involved in a lot of different things on a daily and weekly basis,” she reveals. “And the coolest thing about my job is that each day and week, I get to meet new people from the business, whether it's internal customers, external customers, or even across the other CRH companies.” This enables Boson to always expand her perspective, consider many angles, and interact with a wide range of people, projects, and goals. “There's been a lot of learning, and it's been a great time to be part of the organization,” states Boson.

Beyond growth, “of course, I have to talk about the fact that I get to work with such an amazing group of people,” Boson emphasizes. “The CRH team is really collaborative, loves to work together, and is really here to win and to exercise all the expertise and experience we have for the betterment of the entire organization.”

In the video below, Boson shares more about why she loves working at CRH. We also provide lightly edited highlights from the video discussion in the following article.

How would you describe the culture at CRH?

Culture is always an interesting question to answer because we all have a different viewpoint. At the baseline, our culture at CRH includes things like integrity, trust, and delivering on our performance. But, if I were to put our culture into my own words, I would say it's a winning culture and not just about winning in our markets. Of course, we're a business and we want to do that, but it's really about winning with each other.

We want to win as teams. We want to win and have better and stronger relationships at work. We want to win and have work-life balance. Who doesn't want to be part of a winner, right? And so, for me, the culture is all about winning, and we do things together that are going to enable us to be able to win.

How does CRH support you?

There's actually a leader at CRH who taught me something in the last year. We were talking about work-life balance, and he said to me: “as you progress in your career, work-life balance becomes a bit hard to capture. Really, what it becomes is work-life integration.”

And I agree with him on that because we have to define what the priority is and how to meet that on a daily basis. Sometimes work is the priority, and sometimes life is the priority. But, the manner in which you integrate that is something that’s very flexible at CRH. So, I find that I have the flexibility around the work that I'm doing, the manner in which I do it, and the freedom to determine where I may be doing it.

This is something that, in this post-COVID-19 world, a lot of people are doing. But, at CRH, it really hits home. In the past couple of years, I've been able to continue to grow my family and my personal relationships, all while also continuing to advance my career.

And a lot of that is because of the people who surround me and don't look at me as the Vice President of Business Performance. They look at me as Meagan Boson, with work and family both being important to me. And they know that I’m going to give them insight on how to best support me. And that's what we do for each other at CRH.

What advice would you give to other women looking to work at CRH?

When I got the call from the recruiter to come over to CRH, first of all, I had to Google CRH because I did not know what it was. And then, [I found that CRH was a] $30 billion company! [...] The next thing I looked at was what industry CRH was in, and I was hesitant. I knew it was male-dominated, and I had certain assumptions around what I thought I would face.

But, when I learned about the person who I was going to be reporting to (my current boss, the president of Oldcastle), I was really taken aback by his approach to interviewing and how he really focused on the people in the process and the current team members.

What I pleasantly found is that yes, right now we're on a journey to increase our diversity and inclusion as it relates to women, but the business is ready. [As I mentioned] before, the opportunities are boundless — no matter who you are. So, I would encourage women to give CRH a look, come in, and be part of reinventing the way that the world is built with us.
