With 160 years under its belt and offices in more than 70 countries, Thomson Reuters serves customers who operate in the complex and nuanced industries of legal, tax, compliance and government.

Thomson Reuters brings together information, innovation, and authoritative insight to unravel complex situations, while their worldwide network of journalists and editors keep customers informed on relevant global developments. Simply put: their products, partnerships and people help to uphold the rule of law, turn the wheels of commerce, catch bad actors and report the facts.

Creating an inclusive culture of world class talent is one of their top three organizational goals.  In 2020, the company set goals of 20% or more racial and ethnic diversity, a doubling of Black representation in leadership and 45% or more women in senior leadership roles by the end of 2022.

We reviewed some of the key areas that make Thomson Reuters an exceptional workplace and found that their collective “what more can we do?” mentality fosters an inclusive and supportive environment for women, while offering many attractive benefits.

A do-more mentality.

Thomson Reuters consistently focuses on doing more for its people and the greater good. This is demonstrated through:

  • A sharp focus on reimagining the customer experience, optimizing products and portfolios, simplifying operations, and creating an inclusive culture of world-class talent.

  • Strengthening the foundations of justice and transparency by forming partnerships with customers, employees, and other global organizations. For example, they worked with law enforcement officials to help identify and stop human traffickers during the 2020 Super Bowl in Miami, leading to the 40 arrests and rescuing 20 girls and women.

  • Volunteerism, which is encouraged of all employees and modeled by their leadership teams. Each year employees receive two paid days to volunteer anywhere they choose — and in 2020 their employees logged over 84,000 volunteer hours globally.

Beyond the company’s efforts to do more for the greater good, their people share that Thomson Reuters offers unique opportunities for talent to develop and grow their career while making an impact in the world.

“One thing I love about TR is how focused we are on developing our people, both through formal programs and informal networks. The women at TR are such strong advocates for each other and take time to mentor and coach and find opportunities for one another,” says Rawia Ashraf, VP Product Management based in New York.

“What motivates me every day is that what you write gets read globally and can impact the world,” says Leika, a Reuters chief correspondent for Policy, based in Japan.

A company culture of inclusion for women in the workplace.

Thomson Reuters global diversity and inclusion focus includes the identification, development, and advancement of women to leadership positions. Earlier this year, they publicly announced the goal of increasing overall representation of women in senior leadership positions to 45% by the end of 2022.

Foundational to the  career philosophy is growth and development. At Thomson Reuters you are empowered to own your career, partnered with to support continuous growth and connected to new opportunities as you navigate a career path unique to you.

“Mentorship is a core component of our women’s development programs – which focus on building self-awareness, goal setting, increasing confidence, enhancing leadership skills, sharing strategies for business success and networking with and learning from other talented Thomson Reuters leaders,” the company tells Fairygodboss.

Other initiatives aligned with this priority include:

  • Active mentoring circles that meet on a regular basis to assist setting development goals, building confidence and skills to reach those goals.

  • Business resource groups, including Women at Thomson Reuters, that support their talent through professional development and networking, their customers through industry partnerships, and the world through community outreach and philanthropy.

  • Tuition assistance benefits of up to $5,250 annually are available to those who qualify, along with a robust digital learning program.

“I am proud of the renewed focus I have in achieving my goal of obtaining my degree from my dream school,” says Jennifer, a mother and HR consultant in their Dallas office. “Without the support of Thomson Reuters and care from my manager, that goal would not be possible."

Attractive benefits.

Plus, Thomson Reuters provides many female-friendly employee benefits. In the US, the company provides up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave following the birth, adoption, or placement of a child. This is in addition to the six weeks of paid time-off, short-term disability benefits for the delivering parent. They also offer up to $20,000 in fertility coverage through its medical/Rx plans to eligible employees.

In addition to each employee’s existing paid time-off for vacation, sick and volunteer days, US-based employees receive 13 paid holidays annually, including two “mental health” days off, plus three floating holidays to eligible employees.

It’s no wonder why Thomson Reuters has received a number of awards and recognition, including the “Best Workplace for Women in Canada and India,” in 2021 and 2020, respectively, by Great Places to Work®, and the “Best Company for Women” and “Best CEOS for Women” in 2020 by Comparably. It was also ranked among the “#GirlsClub – Top 25 Companies Where Women Want to Work” in 2020.
