How do I tell an employer who wants to offer me a job that I need them to wait for my answer until after I have a follow up interview with a different employer?

It was great to come on here yesterday and get some really helpful feedback from everyone. I told employer # 1 I would not be able to give them a response until sometime next week after having contacted employer #2 to tell them I had received an offer and could they indicate when a hiring decision was expected. #2 advised me to stall until next week. #1 is grateful I'm even thinking about it and acknowledged "Let us know if you have any questions or comments as you consider your options." Yesterday I felt like an anxious mess. Today I feel like I'm in the driver's seat. Thanks everyone!

Have you heard back from employer #2 yet? Do you have any internal feeling which one you’d prefer after sitting with this for a few more days?

Thank you for asking - they finally called me this morning to set up the final interview! I like both, but for different reasons. I was surprised to hear from #2 initially, and had also thought I had wanted to get out of the industry - apparently I don't. I really like their financial director, whom I'd be working under if they hired me. I feel excited thinking about working for them. #1 is adjacent to but not directly in the same industry. I'm a little overqualified and would be more like a consultant & project manager for them. The down side is it is part time, so I would have to line up something secondary. They now know I'm waiting to hear back on this 2nd opportunity before I can give them a firm answer on their offer and are willing to wait, even knowing there is a 50% chance I might not take it.

Congrats on the interview. The way you feel about it also seems to say a lot so be cognizant of that. If we can help you prepare for it let us know! ?? Good luck.
