Maybe. There is a lot of flexibility in the job, which makes work/life balance easier, however, there is a lot of "gender bias" that management doesn't see. What you can't see, you can't fix.

Beware of sexism and given strange looks when you walk into a meeting and you're the only female.

As a graduate student, I've had a great experience at Rutgers, but experiences are very advisor-dependent.

This was when I was employed as a TA. When I was a fellow, I was allowed to take off as much time as I felt was reasonable (ended up being 6-8 weeks I believe).

January 2016

It can be a really amazing experience but it's not for everyone -- the hours and travel are tough. But if you work hard, do well, and find a good niche it can be hard to beat the impact/importance of the work and the freedom and flexibility at times, and the top-notch pay and benefits.

May 2015

You may not receive a raise for several years, no benefits, no paid vacation or sick days. You must wear a hairnet and visor. Hot and cold conditions and stand for 6 hours and put up with all kinds of rude people. Not an easy job!

April 2015

Too eager to point out soft benefits, like adjusted hours and working from home, as an excuse for low pay (20% or more below industry mean). Unfortunately, these "benefits"--which wouldn't be necessary if they paid appropriate salaries--reinforce stereotypes and reduce opportunities for recognition.
