Employer is well behind the times; compensation is not transparent; ability to know your career ladder is non-existant, despite women who have asked continuously. Employee satisfaction is moderate (based on recent employee surveys); politics are high and there is an attitude of "you have to be mean in order to get ahead". The company has an expectation that everyone runs on altruism and does not provide appropriate compensation for the work. There is a high reliance on "punishment by success" (i.e. if you are successful you get 6 new projects that is well beyond your capacity).

Giving the benefit of the doubt, sexist comments and actions probably come from ignorance or naivety rather than being malicious. Still, it's very present and has an impact on your work. When these actions/comments are pointed out, it's usually laughed off, like "wow, he said that?!" and then ignored, or worse, seen as not having a think enough skin or inability to take a joke.

There are opportunities available for advancement, but while many upper-level management say that they value diversity, actions speak louder than words. I have personally worked under 3 female general managers in 7 stores, 2 of which are no longer with the company. Most of the management team members that I encounter are white men. Generally speaking, Best Buy is good at burning through management, but that does not seem to be discriminatory. I have felt pressure when asking off for vacation time, or sick days that are legitimately needed. I have not yet taking maternity leave, but I suspect that I will feel the same when if and when i do while working for this company. Overall, the benefits are good, and the company offers a variety of options. There are a number of financial benefits to working for Best Buy which I would sorely miss if I do end up leaving for a different opportunity. My current experience has left me feeling tired, and wanting, but not in every situation and not every store if you are looking at retail store level. The pay is extremely competitive, and at one time, I knew that I was the highest paid hourly manager at my level, above several of my male counter-parts.

There's a lot of personnel changes and routine layoffs going on, but if you don't mind working amongst that uncertainty, there can be opportunities for promotion. You as the candidate have to be a self-starter, though, as it's rare that your manager would talk to you about career progression/next steps.

It's very political. On the plus side, there are a lot of female managers and VPs, which is very helpful in evening the playing field. It always comes down to which department you are in.
