I was attending school part time and working a second job. When I tried to request having the weekends off so I could go to class and work my other job. I was denied and told I was expected to work at least one weekend day at a front line employee.

90% of the women in high positions (Manager-Director-CXO-VP) do NOT have children. They seem to devalue the working mom once she chooses to start her family; almost as though they assume that having a child will make you less capable of doing the same work that you were doing prior to becoming a mom.

There are a lot of women in this company, but to get ahead, you really need to excel and managing "up". Much of HR policy is delegated to "manager discretion", which creates an uneven experience across the company. It really depends who you work for. Northern is known for family-friendly policies, and it is truly bankers hours, 8:30-5. It's pretty modern for a 125-year-old company, but struggles to progress anywhere fast. Progress is sloooow and onboarding is a nightmare, as in, there is no onboarding. You have to figure it out as you go and ask around for help.
