"CUF is a well-respected think tank from the outside. On the inside, however, is stunning mismanagement and mistreatment of employees.
There is no proper management structure at the organization, and little transparency into the reasoning behind decisions large and small. Employees are micromanaged and not trusted to independently do even the smallest of tasks. Everyone is expected to take on a ridiculous work load and then achieve a perfect (often unattainable) result that is often not clearly communicated.
Researchers’ work is regularly rewritten and the process of completing a report is arduous, with several rounds of edits and rewrites, causing almost all the work to not meet the unrealistic deadlines that were set internally. Researchers, even the most seasoned, are not allowed to publicly discuss their own policy positions, instead having to go with CUF’s positions, which are solely determined by the Executive Director with no consistent reasoning.
Those who work in the non-research side of the organization, usually women, are treated with little respect, not valued the same way research staff are, and earn much less than their peers.
For an organization that advocates for things like paid internships and apprenticeships, there is a stunning lack of awareness inside the organization. Interns (i.e. Research Assistants) are given a real title, told not to tell anyone they are interns, and are paid a “travel stipend” that is so small it wouldn’t cover 3 months of subway fare.
CUF tends to attract and employ talented people who are truly dedicated to making NYC a better place, but working at CUF is an isolating experience. There is no proper management structure, no one to advocate for you, and little opportunity for growth. It has taken me lots of hard work to move past the horrific experience I had at CUF.
