"Official policies are great; some "local" cultures are very welcoming to women. But male:female ratio is extremely skewed, and you will often be the only woman in the room. That can make it hard to be heard, and taken seriously."

"don't recommend it, the culture is set and you learn whether you will sink or swim rather quickly. unless you have a sponsor, good luck moving up regardless of how many hours you put in. it's an old-school culture, the white male engineer arrogance is very present. It does not help that most of my fellow male colleagues have stay at home wives -- although it's tacit, you will receive incredulous looks, at times, and it is evident what they are thinking. why are you playing with the boys?"
