"Be cautious, it is totally dependent on the team and where you work on whether they are 'women' friendly or not. I have had several incidents happen at work that I felt I had to report. After having working at many other companies, I feel this is the most biased company I have worked for. Including having to fight for promotions, leave roles due to poor supervisor behavior and getting promoted without pay increase. I feel that the Affinity groups and training for employees is great but, isn't followed up on the local level by leadership."

"I have had great opportunities working here for the past 5 years which included multiple promotions and a job change. The gap between men and women still exists although it’s getting better. Working hours are extremely flexible and I’ve been able to work remotely but it’s not on a set schedule. Coworkers with family have no problem adjusting schedules to met their children’s needs. "
"Women are in the minority. It can be very challenging to be taken seriously. You need to develop a strong network to feel like you have any 'street cred'."

"Although there is a large gap between the number of men and woman at GM, I see women rising to various senior roles and feel very supported in my career. Mary Barra is a great role model."

"Company policy is good but not groundbreaking. As a company with a female CEO we should have groundbreaking maternity leave and we do not. The culture is generally great. I absolutely love my job and what I do. One must be aware however that it is still a male dominated field and without malice intent men get more pay and are more likely to be promoted. "

Mary Barra is truly an inspiration to work for, though she is not the only inspiring woman at this company. "Find a mentor. Engage in ERGs and GM Women. I find that there isn't a lot of guidance or understanding of women between 30-38 and mid career. Mostly because there doesn't seem to be a lot of women that I work with in this age group. They are mostly managers or new college grads. I think this is because GM has a fairly traditional career path with a heavy engineering focus. So there might not have been a lot of female engineers, that with the lack of jobs when I graduated from undergrad."

"Do not work here! I was the only female in my DIVISION. Work-life balance doesn't exist (my manager used to have a spread-sheet where he kept track of who took time off and when). Maternity leave is too short (1 month paid). Compensation is also very low."

"GM has great pay, great benefits, and generous holidays, but still there are shockingly few women at or above director level (at least in IT) and ZERO minority women that I have come across at that level for a company where the CEO is a butt-kicking woman."
"Although I know the pay on some of the higher positions is still unequal, everything else is very fair for both men and women (in my experience)."
"This job is physically very demanding. On top of being injured many times, I was subjected to multiple cases of sexual harassment. This went on for 28 years in varying degrees. "I've worked at various departments for 7+ years. Some groups are male dominated and very inexperienced in issues such as maternity leave simply from lack of encountering it. Others are very diverse with family friendly policies. I think you have to take control of your route through the company to take you to the groups that are of most advantage to you at your stage in life, and if you find yourself unable to do so (ex. request for dept. transfer is blocked by manager) then it's time to sharpen the resume for interviewing elsewhere. Don't get stranded. It's the sort of place where you can blink and have spent more than 5 years in a department."
