"At the time I worked there, there were two staff reporters and two freelancers. I covered multiple counties and beats, writing 6-8 stories weekly. On top of reporting duties, I had editing and copywriting duties, and I took my own photos. Every other week, I had a scanner to cover the crime beat, which was kept on 24/7, even on holidays. During that duty, you have to stay within city limits. It would have been impossible to have a consistent part-time job unless it was super flexible. I made $10 per hour. I started off at 40 hours a week, but it moved to 35 to make room for sudden emergency calls to report. I was allowed to go to a professional development event while there, but I had to pay for it and there was no pay for time off. My coworkers were open to questions and story ideas. It was a great place to explore different beats. There are many great and important stories in the community and wonderful people as well."
