"I worked my way up to manager which allowed me to work year round but I had to reapply at least three times a year. No position is guaranteed past the regular season, the six weeks post season and the pre season and I had to apply at every season transition if I wanted to continue working. With each new position came a pay decrease, leaving me financially strapped until tax season rolled around again and I became office manager again. I stuck it out so long because I honestly believed there would be a permanent position for me if I proved myself.
Most women don’t make it past manager. The district and regional managers are brought in from the outside.
The greatest frustration was in the demands made upon the seasonal tax pros. Most of the experienced employees had full time permanent jobs elsewhere. These were the jobs that paid their bills from April trough December and provided health insurance. Still H&R Block expected these employees to devote all of their time to the company beginning with training in December, which were often scheduled during the day. After April H&R Block couldn’t be bothered with these employees outside of tax season. "

"Though flexibility is a stated benefit of working here during onboarding you are ‘strongly encouraged’ to keep your availability wide open. If you tell your manager that you can’t always work all the shifts you are scheduled the manager is supposed to ‘remind’ you that you said you had open availability. "

"Don't. HRB treats first-year employees like indentured servants. The pay is substandard, and you will be scheduled to work shifts that you specifically asked to not work."

"Block is a fairly decent place to work as far s being treated fairly by management and coworkers. However, it is a seasonal position, the compensation is not equal to the duties asked to perform (in some cases tax pros earn as low as minimum wage, and office managers are not paid much better), and because of the nature of the job it can be stressful."

"It depends on your position. Front desk and tax professionals usually get more flexible hours and a better work-life balance than office managers on up."
