Macys.com is a great place to work if you are looking for work life balance. Although the culture varies by team, most of the .com division is flexible, supportive of working moms/dads, and offers great work life balance.

Macy's needs to improve the hiring and training of its store management teams. Macy's is a very old-fashioned, hierarchical organization, which I believe is a factor in the company's declining performance.. Managers believe that employees in lower-level positions have little to offer in terms of identifying issues/opportunities and making recommendations for improvements. In this day and age (and with the pervasiveness of age and gender discrimination), there are many sales associates that have more better credentials (e.g., management experience, education, and skills) than those in management roles in the store. If you work in one of the stores (as opposed to a corporate job), your experience will vary depending on the skills, style, disposition, and biases of the store manager. In the Connecticut store that I worked in, the store manager is an authoritarian who manages by intimidating and belittling his employees. When he is displeased with an employee, he would openly yell at them on the store floor. He chastises employees in front of customers. Employees who have disagreed with him or have complained about his disrespectful behavior are targeted for removal or are retaliated against (e.g., not considered for promotion, receive fewer work hours). Unfortunately, other managers have followed in his footsteps. For example, one employee arrived late to work one day because her child was very ill. She was told by the manager that maybe she should think about not having any more children. So little respect for the people who work here for little pay and little opportunity for advancement. Managers who treat employees in this manner should be fired.

The hours are good, but the company's work from home policy can be non-existent, depending on the team. If there is no option to work from home from time to time, it becomes prohibitive for women to raise families.

  • Recommend to Women?

Maybe. The work life balance exists at the company and is a great place in that regard for working mothers. However, even with a company that is majority female, the executive level continues to be majority male.

Mobility is key if you are starting at the store level. If you are in HQ, make sure to build a solid network of leaders that you can depend on. Like all businesses, there is some politicking, so networking is key for success.

the Kohl's workplace culture encourages and promotes job flexibility. at the store level, part-time employees have some really great optional benefits, such as vision and dental benefits, and flex accounts for child care and medical needs.
