Do not let them talk you into doing uncompensated work outside your job description duties. They will take advantage and it is not rewarded by consideration for full time positions.

If you have extensive expertise already regarding the job you are applying for, and if you are applying for a high level administrative or cabinet level job, you may do well. Otherwise, do not expect vertical growth. You will not be compensated competitively. Job training does not occur.

Only MA maternity leave and FML for staff, paid only as accrued, eligible PTO is available. (No paid parental leave beyond what's stated above.) Paid Parental Leave available for faculty, in addition to MML and FML.

  • One Thing Employer Could Improve

    No longer working there.

  • Recommend to Women?

Maybe. Most academic cabinet level female staff members do fairly well. Mid-level and low level females are used as pawns and/or not viewed/reviewed realistically. Also assigned many more tasks simultaneously than male staff. Budgets do not allow for enough staff at large. More of a working supervisor/manager/director type environment. Delegation and adequate support only occurs at the cabinet level. All remarks are regarding staff, only, not faculty.

Genuine flexibility is on offer for those who want / need it but it definitely comes at a price... Very few women currently in senior leadership positions, even if they're experienced, brilliant and prepared to slog it out full time with the boys.

Entry level positions have set salaries so pay is equal. Working on budgets I've seen inequality at higher levels, but more so because people come from outside rather than moving up.

May 2015

EnerNOC has an old boys' club vibe. There are great entry level men and supportive male managers but the executive leadership advances men to the highest positions, which is a worrisome trend for leadership and for the prospects for women at the company. Unless the highest level of EnerNOC views the limited opportunities for women to be a problem, it is unlikely that this will change. If you are considering EnerNOC, I would recommend explicitly inquiring about the actions that they are taking to make opportunity open to women at their company, why there are no women executives, and what the environment is like for women. There are some great women at EnerNOC who are attempting to change the opportunities for women at the company so maybe they have moved things along since I left. Ask to be connected with an upper management level mentor (likely male) to make connections early on and improve prospects for advancement in the future.
